About Me...what is an 'evangelical-catholic?'

I was born & raised in rural mid-Michigan (M-go blue!). Life & work have taken me to many different places. God has too, as I've come to learn that faith is a pilgrimage. I very much resonate with the label 'EVANGELICAL-CATHOLIC.' I was raised Baptist, but found myself drawn to the Sacraments & Liturgy of the Church. I appreciate very much the words of the Augsburg Confession: "...nothing has been received among us, in doctrine or in ceremonies, that is contrary to Scripture or to the church catholic." Evangelical-catholic is a term of self-designation used by Christians coming from a broad spectrum of theological perspectives and commitments, ranging from Lutherans, Anglicans, and various Evangelicals yearning for greater catholicity .....to faithful Roman Catholics longing for an evangelical renewal of the Church. Perhaps beneath the apparent denominational differences there lies a common...groaning of the Spirit of God, who is seeking to draw the members of Christ’s mystical body into a communal life that is both fully catholic and fully evangelical. One can always hope and pray!

My "scooter"


Just had to post this....

I've always said I'd love to have a scooter......either a Vespa, or one of the many Vespa-ish knock-offs.
Well, maybe someday.

In the interim, I've acquired this beautiful Breezer bike. Note the amenities for the 'business' commuter: bike-rack, chainguard, fenders (real metal). It's a GREAT bike & I enjoy riding it back & forth on my morning commute to the office at LCHS. *MY* carbon footprint is shrinking.......is yours??

"All things new..."

Rev. 21:5 (NRSV) says: "And the one who was seated on the throne said, 'See, I am making all things new.'"

There seems to be a lot of that going on in my life right now. First there's the obvious new "look" & "name" to my blog. Some of this was unavoidable, as I'm notoriously cheap & my former blog host has been warning for months that their free service was going away at the end of the year. So, after a day or so of surfing the web to find a suitable (and free) replacement site......here it is!

Since the inception of my blog, I've also developed more of what I would call my philosophy of ministry. I've always gravitated toward the term "Evangelical-Catholic" as a valid expression of my own faith journey, but this has come to mean so much to me that it now seemed appropriate to incorporate this term into the blog's name itself.

Then there's the SUPER NEW thing about all things being made new lately...
My family and I have recently relocated from the rural landscape of Western PA to the NW Suburbs of Chicagoland. Back in May I accepted the call as Pastor of Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit (LCHS), Elk Grove Village, IL, but the move itself needed to wait until school was out, etc. The long & short of it is that July has been a busy month of NEW THINGS! Yet, the transition seems to be going well. Last Sunday (22nd) I was installed at a BEAUTIFUL afternoon Holy Eucharist service, in which my good friend The Rev. JP Salay was the guest preacher.

With new things comes new challenges, of course. I pray that God will guide me through it all.
